Unlike a plotter, a plotter/cutter requires a vacuum table to hold the material in place while it is cutting and a sacrificial plastic surface to cut on. A 3rd motor is required to orientate the blade to the direction of travel.
They also require much greater power and rigidity due to the forces involved in cutting. Our plotter/cutter is driven from both sides of the table for rigidity and uses powerful twin stack type 34 micro-stepping motors. These are powerful enough to move the machine while someone is sitting on it. In fact we offer the option of triple stack motors for even greater power. Although capable of greater speeds, typical cutting speeds are 1m/s (39in/s).
As standard the cutter uses the popular 28mm(1.1in) diameter rotary blade. These are available worldwide from OLFA outlets : RB28-2. Like a round razor blade, these blades are the preferred option because:

As standard the cutter uses the popular 28mm(1.1in) diameter rotary blade. These are available worldwide from OLFA outlets : RB28-2. Like a round razor blade, these blades are the preferred option because:
(i) They roll over the fabric and cut with downward pressure rather than pushing the fabric. This means the vacuum required to hold the fabric in place is much less.
(ii) Because the pressure from the blade is distributed over a few mm along the blade rather than at a single point, a rotary blade does not cut up the sacrificial surface very much. |
For very tough fabrics like heavy carbon fibre, or if a very small radius needs to be cut then a straight blade is required. We have an optional heavy duty carbide straight blade which can be interchanged with the rotary blade in these cases. However for almost all work done in the canvas or sailmaking industry, a rotary blade is the preferred and only blade needed.

Any pen up to 17mm (0.65in) diameter can be used.
We do not supply vacuum tables because of their weight. They are low tech items that are easy to build and customise. We supply plans for customers to build their own.
